Provide systems engineering and critical math model integration support to the Systems Analysis Branch (EV74), the System Evaluation team, the Systems Modeling Team (SMT), the Space Launch (SLS) Program, and the SLS Elements.   


Specific support to be provided and performed includes:
  • Creation and management of the SLS Modeling and Simulation Plan for the Block 1B vehicle configuration. 
  • Provide oversight, management, and maintenance support for the Cross Program Design Math Model (DMM) log documentation for Block 1B.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to define model requirements and inputs, model development, model assessment and verification, model validation, and evaluation of design criteria related to operational goals.
  • Perform criticality assessment of models/simulations and assist developers in determining if the model/simulation meets the criteria for a critical design math model and thus is a candidate for inclusion in the Cross Program Design Model Log for Block 1B.
  • Assist model owners/developers with the characterization or calculation of the metadata associated with the model.
  • Use parametric, bounding, probabilistic, and/or comparative studies with the models and analyses to better define and reduce risk, uncertainties, and probabilities of failure.
  • Provide input for development and maintenance of tools and databases, input for failure propagation logic model development and quantification, and input for probabilistic risk assessments.
  • Measure and track the maturity levels of Block 1B models and simulations and their metadata across SLS Program.
  • Serve as a Systems Engineering (SE) Representative for DMMs in support of the EV70 Design & Analysis Sublead.
  • Assist in the development of reference procedures or work instructions for documentation, use, and management of the SLS Block 1B models and simulations.
  • Interface with engineering disciplines, SLS Program, Elements, Safety and Mission Assurance, and outside organizations to verify, validate, and certify critical math models.
  • Participate in design reviews, meetings (i.e. team/discipline, TIMs, teleconferences, etc.), working groups, and trade studies.


A Degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, mathematics or equivalent fields of study from an ABET-accredited university is required as well as experience and expertise in the development, documentation, and operation of physical and virtual simulations.  Typical educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience using, verifying, and validating models and simulations, a Master’s degree with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience using, verifying, and validating models and simulations, or a BS with at least 15 years of relevant experience using, verifying, and validating models and simulations.

  • Experience leading and/or performing verification, validation, and accreditation/certification (VV&A) of models and simulation is required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with the building of physics based mathematical models, performing probabilistic risk analysis, performing Monte Carlo simulations, and/or programming in MATLAB is expected.
  • The ideal candidate will have:
    • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering executive level briefings
    • Outstanding negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving
    • Capability to break down complex problems or issues into manageable pieces
  • Experience managing the creation of Model & Simulation (M&S) VV&A policies and procedures as well as their implementation is desired.
  • Experience performing assessments of vehicle level analyses leading to successful critical design review is desired.
  • The ideal candidate will be a Certified Modeling & Simulation Professional (CMSP).
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.
  • Outstanding skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook) are required.
Personnel are required to be self-motivated, effective team players familiar with working in a dynamic work environment who are willing to assume a Systems Integration leadership role in this SLS M&S effort.
