The key purpose of the position is to provide Systems Engineering and Integrated Logistics Support ((ILS)) expertise relative to space launch vehicle, ground, manufacturing, test, and support systems in support of the Space Launch System Program (SLSP) Spacecraft Payload Integration and Evolution (SPIE) Office.  This position provides in-depth technical engineering support and logistics systems engineering.

Responsibilities

Discipline areas include Systems Engineering, Logistics Support Analysis (LSA) with emphasis on Maintenance Task Analysis (MTA), and Verification and Validation of design and performance requirements related to launch vehicle operations activities.

                                                                                         

Work as part of a team supporting senior engineers and project/program personnel. Tasks include:

  • Application of ILS tenets that include Design Influence; Maintenance Planning; Manpower & Personnel; Supply Support (such as Supply Chain Management (SCM); Support Equipment; Technical Data; Training and Training Support; Computer Resources Support; Facilities; and Packaging, Handling, Storage & Transportation (PHS&T).
  • Apply Design for Support and Support the Design supportability approach.
  • Review, understand, interpret, assess, and analyze flight and ground hardware drawings/schematics.
  • Support definition and selection of Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).
  • Maintain an LSA Record (LSAR) database,
  • Perform access analysis, Maintenance Tasks Analysis, and related assessments/analyses.
  • Support manufacturing, in-process test, integrated test development activities, and launch site operations.
  • Review, understand, interpret, assess, and analyze Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and Interface Requirements Documents (IRDs).
  • Perform Verification and Validation of design and performance requirements related to space launch vehicles.
  • Apply knowledge/familiarity of life cycle processing of ground support equipment (GSE) and flight hardware.
  • Apply understanding of flight and ground hardware assembly and integration of sub-systems.
  • Perform document and milestone review activities, to include major milestones such as Design Certification Review (DCR), review of various SLSP Systems Engineering and Integration (SE&I) and KSC Ground Systems Development and Operations Program (GSDOP) products, including but not limited to logistics plans, logistics analysis reports, documentation/plans, and ICDs.
  • Support the SLSP Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) Team meetings.
  • Support team meetings with Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Ground Systems Development and Operations Program (GSDOP). 

Participation in special studies, trades, and review task teams is expected.

 

This position will include coordination with the SLS Program representatives (Level 2), Project Element representatives (Level 3), Element Prime Contractors, and others as required to fulfill this task. Other areas of responsibility include but are not limited to: maintaining knowledge of requirements, performing gap analysis, participation in risk identification and development, support to test and integration activities, and performing Change Package Engineer (CPE) duties. The contractor will participate in working groups, design reviews, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), technical performance meetings, teleconferences, engineering board reviews, and document reviews as needed. The contractor will travel to NASA and contractor facilities as required to support, reviews, meetings, TIMs, conferences, etc.

 

Work closely with NASA Government counterparts, Government prime contractor personnel, and multiple engineering disciplines.

Qualifications

Engineering or engineering related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) Degree from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years experience, a Masters with a minimum of 6 years experience, or a BS with a minimum of 10 years experience.  Degree in Systems and/or Logistics Engineering desired.

 

Required Qualifications/Experience:

  • Systems Engineering experience and/or education.
  • Logistics Engineering experience and/or education.
  • Experience reviewing, understanding, interpreting, assessing, and analyzing flight and ground hardware drawings/schematics.
  • Experience in definition and selection of Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).
  • Experience maintaining an LSA Record (LSAR) database.
  • Experience perform access analysis, Maintenance Tasks Analysis, and related assessments/analyses.
  • Experience supporting manufacturing, in-process test, integrated test development activities, and launch site operations.
  • Experience in reviewing and understanding Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and Interface Requirements Documents (IRDs).
  • Experience in Verification and Validation of design and performance requirements related to space launch vehicles.
  • Experience understanding flight and ground hardware assembly and integration of sub-systems.

Desired Qualifications/Experience:

  • Experience within aerospace/space industry highly desired.
  • Experience in development and management of console operations procedures and tools.  Experience managing, monitoring, assessing and performing operations of complex systems in a console environment. (Test Console Operations, Vehicle Console Operations, etc.)
  • Experience using software tools that consider factors such as mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to failure (MTTF), mean time to repair (MTTR), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), statistical distributions, tradeoffs in component/system design, repair capability, training, spares inventory, demand history, storage and distribution points, and  transportation methods. 
  • Experience using LSA and an LSAR database similar to PowerLOG-J to increase efficiency of maintenance and reduce the cost of providing support by preplanning all aspects of Integrated Logistics Support. Experience defining support requirements for launch vehicle and support equipment system design.
  • Familiarity with Human Factors Engineering, MIL-STD-1472G.                                                                                            

Position requires skills, capabilities and knowledge required to interface with program level representatives as well as engineers and other technical personnel designing, developing and delivering flight elements. Experience in technical integration of complex aerospace systems or operations engineering during the design, development, test and evaluation (DDT&E) and operations phases is desired. Experience with ground operations and logistics for Space Shuttle, International Space Station (ISS), Expendable Launch Vehicle, Ground Support Equipment (GSE) requirements, implementation, and/or manufacturing, integration of payloads, space systems, and/or space programs is highly desired.  Knowledge of NASA spacecraft, launch vehicles, space launch operations, and flow processes desired.

 

Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills required. 

Experience with a PC and Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook required.
