    Responsibilities

    This position supports integration of the SLS Core Stage Avionics and electrical subsystems assembly, integration and test activities at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility (MAF).

    This position requires broad technical capability to support design, assembly and integration activities. These include all avionics and electrical subsystems hardware including all associated wiring and electrical and communications connectors and interfaces.  Problem solving and trouble shooting, including hands-on use of test equipment will be required during integration, start-up and integration of the systems. The avionics systems consist of the following but not limited to the following hardware items: Command and Telemetry Computers, Combined Control System Electronics, Flight Termination System, Rate Gyro Assembly, Transponders, RINU, Power Distribution Unit and Main Battery Unit.

    Responsibilities of this job include:

     

    • Support the development and execution of the integration, assembly and test activities of the Core Stage Avionics.
    • Attend and support Material Review and Engineering Review Boards (MRB and ERB) in support of Core Stage Avionics related issues.
    • Support and develop and execution of test architectures, test, plans and test procedures for the following:
    • Launch vehicle avionics integration and testing
    • Core Stage Avionics system testing
    • Conduct trade studies/assessments to determine the optimal design and integration solutions for avionics integration and test within a manufacturing facility.
    • Collect data and perform assessments of the integrated Core Stage Avionics to continually assess compliance against design and integration requirements across Elements.
    • Provide integration subject matter expert insight, evaluation and review of Core Stage verification compliance documents at the element level and provide comment/recommendation to the appropriate Core Stage Lead Engineer, EDLE or Engineer.
    • Evaluate Change Requests for impacts to avionics systems, interfaces and vehicle integration processes.
    • Review relevant verification and validation information for stages and SLS Avionics Systems and provide input to Core Stage verification and validation records as required by the SLS Core Stage Office.
    • Document and deliver results of Core Stage Avionics integration, testing, verification/validation and material compliance with recommendation(s) to the appropriate Core Stage engineering organization.
    • Work with design groups to resolve issues with equipment, cables, and avionics integration hardware needed throughout the Core Stage assembly integration and test phases. For example: cable lengths, end connectors, pinouts and all Core Stage avionics design custom equipment, cables and integration hardware needed throughout the flow of hardware at MAF.
    • Develop and execute work orders for MAF manufacturing, track manufacturing progress, support resolution of manufacturing issues, test and checkout, and arrange for transport and delivery to the applicable facility at MSFC.
    • Assist with installation, system hardware analysis, and hands on trouble shooting during integration of the Core Stage Avionics at the manufacturing, integration and test facilities.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    These activities will be on-going as the launch vehicle matures and the SLS Program completes program phases, reviews and schedule milestones.

    Qualifications

    Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 9 years of experience, Masters with at least 13 years of experience, or BS with at least 15 years of experience.

     

     

        Minimum 10 years of experience in the area of design, integration and systems testing.

        Must be able to acquire a good understanding of requirements for the downstream systems instrumentation/mechanical etc.

        Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, along with presentation skills are required so as to communicate with the customer within a highly technical and advanced manufacturing and engineering environment.

     

        Demonstrated expertise in:

    • Systems Engineering especially the development, integration and test of end to end systems, subsystems, hardware and software.
    • Development and execution of test plans and procedures.
    • Working with busses, networks and standards such as MIL-STD-1553, Ethernet and RS422 and Electrical Bonding for Launch Vehicles, Spacecraft, Payloads, and Flight Equipment. The successful candidate will be required to implement the NASA Electrical Bonding Standard NASA-STD-4003 and its SLS equivalent.
    • Trouble shooting and testing in support of distributed computing and simulation of launch vehicle and spacecraft systems.
    • Integration tasks and development activities.
    • Experience with electrical wiring specifications and DC and AC power systems.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Ability to perform hands-on integration and trouble shooting, including proficiency with Basic lab hardware and hardware diagnostic tools.
    • Experience in a manufacturing environment.

     

    Following experience would be an added advantage:

    • Active participation in value engineering workshops.

    Sound understanding of facility operations and machine safety within a large operational manufacturing facility and knowledge of manufacturing safety standards.
