    This position will provide subject matter expert level systems management support as a Deputy Discipline Lead Engineer specifically for booster within the Space Systems Department at MSFC. Candidate will serve as an expert in avionics systems integration engineering and systems management and would be responsible for the integration of booster to core stage avionics (integrated hardware and software) for the Space Launch System (SLS) launch vehicle. Duties may include, but not be limited to, the following:

    • Assisting or leading the planning for avionics hardware/software design solutions with special emphasis on hardware and software integration, test and verification
    • Lead technical analysis as required for the Booster Avionics Element
    • Provide insight/oversight and coordination with the SLS booster prime contractor and subcontractors
    • Assisting with the technical integration of both hardware and software and recommending design solutions when appropriate
    • Support hardware in the loop testing 
    • Supporting trade studies related to booster avionics and avionics interfaces
    • Supporting strategic planning activities in support of the NASA customer
    • Making technical risk mitigation/management inputs
    • Coordinating technical performance measures
    • Attending, providing input to, conducting, and/or presenting at technical reviews, working groups and board meetings
    • Reviewing and responding to comments from meetings
    • Developing integrated schedules, status reports, and other technical documentation
    • Providing periodic status inputs and briefings to SLS project, ES management and JS management
    • Provide leadership for the engineering team for insight into the following:
      • Booster avionics subsystem architecture
      • Booster avionics component design, development, test, verification, qualification and integration
      • Booster avionics subsystem integrated test
      • Support to Level II for system integration testing
      • Systems engineering for booster avionics
      • Booster avionics operation requirements
    • Interface with Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) in support of the Booster Element
    • Provide status to the Booster Element Office
    • Coordinate with the other SLS Element Offices in support of the interfaces
    • Other duties as assigned


    Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required.  Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 19 years of experience, Masters with at least 23 years of experience, or BS with at least 25 years of experience.

    Required Skills for this position include:

    • Broad background in systems engineering, booster avionics, hardware and software, project management, ability to converse with multiple subject matter experts at all levels with emphasis on the avionics hardware
    • Practical experience with on designing, testing, integrating, qualifying, delivering, and supporting hardware and software
    • Intimate familiarity with development and manufacturing protocols such as noncompliance (NCs), waivers, deviations, engineering changes, and problem reporting
    • The ability to communicate to all levels of management
    • Expertise in avionics and integration of hardware and software within a launch vehicle
    • Practical experience with the planning and management of the technical integration, logistical planning, and test definition associated with avionics hardware and software electrical systems
    • Knowledge of technical and test risk mitigation planning
    • Comprehensive understanding of Marshall Space Flight Center’s processes and working within the NASA environment and familiarity with NASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures
    • Ability to review and provide relevant feedback on Level II and III technical products
    • Excellent communication skills, technical writing, and presentation skills
    • Strong customer relations skills, ability to multi-task, ability to be proactive in between formal assignments, and ability to get a task completed with minimal direction
    • Employee must be self-motivated, team player familiar with working in a dynamic work environment
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word
    • Proven ability to socialize recommendations achieving group consensus

    Desired Skills for this position include:

    • Experience with Space Shuttle, Ares or SLS booster avionics hardware and software
    • Thorough knowledge/experience supporting the full life cycle (phases A-E), including but not limited to requirements, testing, prototyping, etc. 
    • Understanding/experience of contracting between NASA/MSFC and a prime contractor
