    This position is to provide software development and integration in support of the in-house analysis capabilities of the Advanced Concepts Office (ACO) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). The Advanced Concepts Office

    at MSFC specializes in concept definition studies for space exploration elements. The Office consists of multi-discipline design teams that can provide fully-integrated assessments of missions and vehicle elements.

    The Trajectories Engineer will use trajectory optimization tools (INTROS and POST) to perform launch vehicle design and performance analysis of future aerospace systems including the Space Launch System (SLS). Additionally, the Trajectories Engineer will:

    • Develop preliminary design concepts and perform quick response trade studies of space transportation vehicle concepts.
    • Support specialized launch vehicle analysis that will be required to support the current SLS analysis tasks.
    • Plan and perform analyses independently and will organize study data and results for documentation and presentation to study customers.
    • Develop aerodynamic models as required to support tasks.
    • Adapt external aerodynamic models to support in –house trajectory files.
    • Lead/Continue the development of a software tool (multiPOST) to automate running multiple scenarios and configurations in the POST tool.



    • Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Masters with at least 3 years of experience, or BS with at least 5 years of experience.
    • Position Requirements:
    • Experience in detailed trajectory and performance analysis of launch vehicles
    • Knowledge of Orbital Mechanics and Ascent Flight Mechanics, along with basic knowledge of GN&C interactions
    • Familiarity of the following programming languages: FORTRAN, C/C++, Python
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and unix operating systems
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
    • Strong interpersonal skills to enable successful performance in a collaborative engineering environment
    • Ability to handle the fast response time and multiple priorities necessary for customer actions.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills
    • Desired Skills:
    • Coursework and experience with Georgia Institute of Technology Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL)
    • Experience in performing trajectory and performance analyses and trade studies using Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories (POST) and\or POST2
